The walls — both political and legal — are closing in on Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.).

Gabrielle Lipsky, the communications director for Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.), has resigned from the congressman’s office, a source familiar with the situation confirmed Friday to The Hill.

Angry GOP gets a needed break. But tough times lie ahead

BY EMILY BROOKS

House Republicans are finally getting a break from each other over Thanksgiving after a grueling, contentious stretch that saw two fights over how to avoid a shutdown, three weeks without a Speaker, and even an allegation of a jab to the kidneys.

But when they come back, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is not set to have an easy time corralling the fractious, razor-thin majority as it faces continued internal funding fights, a progressing impeachment investigation and a likely vote to expel one of its own.

Judge denies Trump’s mistrial motion in NY fraud case

BY ELLA LEE

A New York judge has denied former President Trump’s motion for a mistrial in his civil fraud case, rejecting the claim that the judge and his principal law clerk had “tainted” the trial with bias.

Judge rules Trump ‘incited’ Jan. 6 riots, but can remain on Colorado primary ballot

BY SARAH POLUS AND NICK ROBERTSON

A Colorado judge has rejected an attempt to bar former President Trump from the state’s primary ballot over 14th Amendment claims, according to court documents filed Friday.

District Judge Sarah Wallace agreed with plaintiffs that Trump “incited” the Jan. 6, 2021, riots on the Capitol and could be disqualified using the 14th Amendment, but that the law’s wording means it does not apply specifically to the office of president.

The tapes, shared by the Committee on House Administration, show the Capitol premises during the insurrection. So far, roughly 90 hours of the 44,000 hours of footage have been made public, but the full collection is expected to be released by Monday.

Republicans begin posting Jan. 6 footage online

BY ELIZABETH CRISP

House Republicans have begun releasing thousands of hours of footage from inside the Capitol from Jan. 6, 2021, when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the building.

“This decision will provide millions of Americans, criminal defendants, public interest organizations, and the media an ability to see for themselves what happened that day, rather than having to rely upon the interpretation of a small group of government officials,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said in announcing the website, where videos will be posted throughout the weekend.

White House: GOP’s impeachment inquiry is unconstitutional ‘congressional harassment’

BY EMILY BROOKS

The White House on Friday responded to a flurry of subpoenas sent out by House Republicans by arguing that the impeachment inquiry into President Biden is unconstitutional and amounts to “Congressional harassment” for political purposes.

“The subpoenas and interview requests purport to be in furtherance of what you have characterized as an ‘impeachment inquiry,’ even though no such inquiry has been authorized by the House of Representatives,” Richard Sauber, special counsel to the president, wrote in a letter to House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) and House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio).

Conservatives not planning to shift education messaging ahead of 2024

BY LEXI LONAS

Republicans say their education policies are not to blame for last week’s election losses, and they are planning to hold their current course heading into 2024.

Last week, Virginia Democrats, many of whom made schools a leading campaign issue, were able to secure full control of the state’s General Assembly, while Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) was reelected in a red state on a pro-public schools campaign.

Congress needs to protect kids, not Big Tech

BY CLARE MORELL, JOEL THAYER AND MICHAEL TOSCANO

OPINION | Social media is a threat to our children. A bipartisan Congress is now stepping up to make Big Tech products safe for our children; but the social media companies are putting their incredible lobbying power behind efforts to break the momentum.

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s May 2023 advisory warning found “ample” evidence that social media use presents “a profound risk of harm to the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents.”

Why the GOP’s immigration plan won’t do anything to stem the tide of illegal border crossers

BY NOLAN RAPPAPORT

OPINION | Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee recently unveiled a proposal to fix the Biden administration’s policies that they claim are causing the crisis at the southern border, prioritizing instead the reforms they think are most critical to stemming the flow of illegal crossers now.

Their proposal ignores what is happening in the interior of the country, just focusing on what is happening at the border. This will not stem the flow of illegal crossers, however. It is the administration’s lax interior enforcement policy that is attracting the record-breaking number of illegal crossers.
