Two lawsuits against Panera Bread claim their highly caffeinated Charged Lemonade led to the death of two customers, which the company disputes. The Food and Drug Administration recommends healthy adults consume no more than 400 milligrams of caffeine per day. But people with certain existing health conditions could suffer negative consequences of consuming caffeine even if they have less than 400 milligrams.

California workers who smoke weed will have new protections in 2024

California employees will soon officially have protections from discrimination based on their use of cannabis or marijuana while off the clock and away from the workplace. The new protections come from an amendment to California’s Fair Employment and Housing Act (AB 2188) which was approved by Governor Gavin Newsom on Sept. 18, 2022, and goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2024.

Parents sue Michigan school district over pronouns

In May 2022, a student at Rockford Public School District in Michigan asked a counselor to tell teachers to use he/him pronouns and a masculine name when referring to the student. The school complied with the student’s wish and did not tell the parents, as was its policy. When the parents found out they eventually withdrew their child for homeschooling and filed a lawsuit against the school district.

More older Americans are working, earning higher wages

A new Pew Research Center report found that older Americans are making up a larger portion of the workforce. In 2023, 19 percent of U.S. adults 65 and older were employed. Women are making up a larger share of the older workforce.

Feature of the Week: Washington, DC tops list of most people living alone in US

The Chamber of Commerce analyzed census bureau data. Among more than 170 cities with a population of at least 150,000, Washington, D.C. ranked first among percent of one-person households. This was followed by Birmingham, Ala.; St. Louis, Mo.; Atlanta, Ga.; and Cleveland, Ohio in fifth.
