12:30 REPORT

PRESENTED BY

Happy Friday! What a wild, fun week this has been. I’m on my way back to Washington, but this has been a weird travel morning with the major technology outages. I’ll explain more below if you haven’t been following the story. What’s happening:

  • Former President Trump gave his first public remarks since his attempted assassination. You could hear a pin drop in the arena as he recounted his story.
  • It was a wild scene from my vantage point on the convention floor last night. Keep reading for the tidbits, sights and sounds.
  • Reporting over whether President Biden will step down have significantly escalated in the last 24 hours. He’s under enormous pressure by key Democrats — and sources tell The Hill he’s making his decision this weekend.

Filing while en route to D.C., I’m Cate Martel with a quick recap of the morning and what’s coming up. Send tips, commentary, feedback and cookie recipes to cmartel@thehill.com. Did someone forward this newsletter to you? Sign up here.

We had Trump, Trump Lite *and* Trump Ultra:

Former President Trump entered the Republican National Convention stage like a 1980s rock star Thursday, marquee sign and all.

He recounted Saturday’s attempted assassination in great detail. “I shouldn’t be here,” he reflected solemnly. Chants of “yes, you should” followed. The room was so incredibly quiet and still during Trump’s tale that you could hear a pin drop. Some supporters had tears in their eyes. 📹 Here was my vantage point

But that somber, muted tone didn't last for long: Once Trump finished speaking about the shooting, he slowly reverted to a more familiar tone. The former president veered off-script, and it felt much like a standard campaign rally. He spoke for more than 90 minutes (!), making it the longest acceptance speech by a major party candidate in history.

Plus: Five takeaways

➤  SIGHTS AND SOUNDS:

The vibe on the convention floor: It was a madhouse. Some delegates were seated, some danced by their seats and others lined the aisles. Convention staff repeatedly tried to keep the aisles clear, but hundreds of reporters had access to the floor — and were roaming without a seat or designated area. Yellow lanyards signified members of the press, making them easily identifiable.

At times, delegates got aggravated and short-tempered with reporters. One delegate yelled for journalists and photographers to get out of his section — and “stop blocking our view.” He told me he would try to “have my badge taken away” if I didn’t leave his section. Lol. 🤔

Gosh, that’s cheesy: NBC’s Jacob Soboroff posted a photo of the Wisconsin delegation sporting cheeseheads.

A tense tidbit: Bloomberg’s Jennifer Jacobs posted: “A muffled bang near the press riser on the floor of the RNC during Trump's speech made people freeze then look around, including some reporters who were at Pennsylvania rally during shooting. The sound was a woman who collapsed. Paramedics treated her, Trump staff checked on her. Possible dehydration, an aide here said.” 📸 Photo

📹 Watch Melania Trump enter the arena: Thursday night was her first appearance at the convention.

📸 See the balloons in netting on the ceiling before they dropped

Oh, hello Hulk: Former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan ripped off his shirt, revealing a Trump-Vance shirt. 📸 Photo

Who got special treatment in Trump’s box?: HuffPost’s Igor Bobic posted, “10 Senate Republicans in the box with Trump tonight. [Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.)], who accosted the Secret Service director yesterday, got an extended handshake.” 📸 Photo of Trump’s box ; Backstory

📹 Watch the moment the balloons were released: I was standing on the floor and watched them fall in slow motion. I had forgotten how slow a balloon drop is!

🪑 Poor North Dakota: Despite Gov. Doug Burgum (R) being a finalist for Trump’s VP, his state’s delegation was placed in the back left corner. Some of the seats are even in a covered nook under the teleprompter. 📸 North Dakota’s area 📸 The covered nook seats

You may have seen different versions of this same lede: Roll Call’s Niels Lesniewski noticed: “Depending on when your local newspaper hit the print deadline, you may have seen one of these two versions of a paragraph in the same AP story about Trump's speech.” 📸 Compare the versions

I do not like this: By the entrance of the Baird Center, which is where the media filing center was, there was a woman standing with a binder. Well, it took me until Thursday to realize that this woman is NOT REAL. It's been an exhausting week, so please don’t compare me to the viral “this man isn’t real” woman who became a meme. 😅

📹 See for yourself. This woman is not real!

Wow, time flies!: C-SPAN’s Howard Mortman posted a side-by-side comparison of ex-Trump White House trade adviser Peter Navarro speaking at the 1996 Democratic convention and the 2024 Republican convention.

More new medicines means more generic medicines.

Medicines face competition from other brands, generics and biosimilars. In fact, 90% of all prescription medicines dispensed are generics and biosimilars.

🚨 In the White House

Kamala Harris is obviously Rhaenyra, but who’s Aegon?

There is a very real chance that by the end of the weekend, President Biden is no longer on the top of the presidential ticket. Axios’s Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen dropped an eye-catching report Thursday that claims Biden, privately, has “resigned to mounting pressure, bad polls, and untenable scrutiny making it impossible to continue his campaign.”

Well-connected Democratic insiders tell The Hill they expect Biden to make a decision this weekend. In fact, Alexander Bolton and Amie Parnes report that the talk about high-level Democratic strategists and donors has shifted to who is best suited to be Vice President Harris’s running mate.

The short list: Sen. Mark Kelly (Ariz.), Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper

➤  THIS IS NOT A DEVELOPMENT BIDEN WELCOMED:

Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), who is in the midst of a tough reelection battle, became the second Senate Democrat to call for Biden to withdraw from the presidential race.

(Sen. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) was the first Senate Democrat to call on Biden to exit the race.)

🖥️ Other News This Morning

It’s moments like this that I realize how dependent we all are on technology:

“A global technology outage affecting Microsoft grounded flights, took broadcasters off the air and even had 'limited' impacts on the Paris Olympics early Friday.”

“The outage has been attributed to a ‘defect’ in a software update from the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, which said shortly before 6 a.m. ET the issue had been ‘identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed.’” (The Hill)

Flight problems: More than 3,000 flights have been cancelled so far, and over 27,000 have been delayed, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware.

What we know, from NPR: ‘Widespread technology outage disrupts flights and banking around the world’

What caused the meltdown?

OK, this is pretty funny: @MaxPollard92 posted, “Microsoft outage but Teams and Outlook are both fine is the adult version of snow that doesn’t settle enough for a school closure.”

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was sentenced:

A Russian court sentenced Wall Street Journal reporter to 16 years in prison. He pleaded not guilty to espionage charges.

What does this mean for Gershkovich?: “It’s not clear how the conviction and sentencing will affect ongoing negotiations between the U.S. and Russia on a potential prisoner swap. The Kremlin has acknowledged ongoing dialogue, as has Washington, but the talks don’t appear to have made any progress in recent months.” (The Hill)

🌭This makes my stomach hurt: MLB posted on X: “The Royals have a new ballpark food item called the "Taste of the K Taco" ... It's a hot dog wrapped in a cheeseburger quesadilla, with barbecue brisket, French fries, lettuce, onions, Sriracha Cracker Jacks and 816 Sauce.” 📸  Photo of this monstrosity
