Happy Friday! President Trump’s inauguration weekend was exactly a year ago now. Part of me feels like that was just yesterday but most of me feels like it’s been two or three years!

In today's issue:

  • Trump focuses on rural health care

  • Eye-catching stat on Trump allies’ fundraising

  • ICE pressure ramps up in Congress

  • Sinema accused of breaking up ex-aide's marriage

Programming note: The Hill’s 12:30 Report will not publish Monday for the holiday. See you Tuesday!

🩺 IN THE WHITE HOUSE

Taking care of business before heading to Florida:

AP

President Trump is spending his long weekend in Palm Beach, Fla. But before he left, he hosted a roundtable at the White House this morning to discuss investments in rural health care.

Midterms are on his mind: “I hope you remember this in the midterms because the Democrats are just so horrible toward the rural community,” Trump said during the roundtable.

Remember: Republicans made cuts to Medicaid earlier this year, which has left some communities bracing for impacts. The White House has focused on lowering health care costs as a major message for the midterms. It’s all about affordability these days.

The Trump administration released a health care plan Thursday that focuses on lowering prescription drug prices, reducing health care premiums and requiring price transparency.

^ How The Washington Post’s Dan Diamond describes this new health care plan: “a grab bag of proposals that falls far short of the Affordable Care Act replacement [Trump has] long promised.”

➤ TRUMP ALSO FLOATED SLAPPING TARIFFS OVER GREENLAND:

During the roundtable event, Trump floated slapping tariffs on countries that oppose the U.S. acquiring Greenland.

How this came up: Trump said he threatened France and Germany with a 25 percent tariff if they didn’t pay more for prescription drugs.

In Trump’s words: “I went through country after country. I just went one after another. I may do that for Greenland, on countries if they don’t go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security,” he said.

➤ THIS IS A WILD STAT:

Since President Trump was elected for his second term, he and his allies have raised nearly $2 billion, which is likely more than was raised for his campaign, according to a New York Times report. Of 346 donors identified, at least 197 have personally benefited from the Trump administration’s policies.

🚔 ON CAPITOL HILL

ICE pressure:

Fights are ramping up on Capitol Hill over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after two incidents in Minneapolis that have sparked tense protests.

Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act to quell protests, but some Senate Republicans are urging him not to.

^For what it’s worth: New York Times White House correspondent Maggie Haberman says people should take Trump seriously when he talks about invoking the Insurrection Act.

This is now tied to the government funding deadline: Democratic lawmakers are threatening to withhold support for Department of Homeland Security funding because it includes ICE. The funding deadline is Jan. 30.

The talk of the internet:

Former Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (Ariz.), the Democrat turned Independent, is being sued by the ex-wife of one of the members of her security detail. The lawsuit alleges the former senator broke up the couple’s 14-year marriage.

You can sue for that?: North Carolina is one of the few states where you can sue for interfering in a marriage. Heather Ammel filed the suit, claiming Sinema broke up her marriage to Matthew Ammel. She has asked for a trial by jury and is seeking more than $25,000 in damages.

What the suit claims:

• It accuses Sinema of seducing her former aide.

• It claims Sinema asked him to bring MDMA on a work trip “so that she could guide through a psychedelic experience.”

• It claims the then-senator purchased gifts for him and paid for him to receive psychedelic treatment.

➤ WHAT POLITICAL STRATEGISTS ARE READING:

The Cook Political Report shifted 18 House races toward Democrats ahead of the midterms.

➤ TRUMP IS TAKING NOTE OF VOTE ABSENSES:

The White House has begun taking note of which House Republican lawmakers are missing votes, particularly those who are focusing their energy more on campaigning than legislating, The Washington Post’s Kadia Goba reports. That’s because Republicans’ margins are so slim that absent GOP votes are slowing down votes on the Trump administration’s priorities.

From a person close to Trump: “The president does not like it when he hears about members missing votes.”

📰 OTHER NEWS

Scratch off my name, write in your own and it’ll be as good as new!:

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado says she gave her Nobel Peace Prize to Trump during their Thursday afternoon meeting.

The Nobel Peace Prize is transferable?: Eh, not really. The Norwegian Nobel Institute has said that once a prize is given out, it cannot be formally transferred. But Machado, who has pushed to secure support from the president, did so anyway.

Which brings us to today: Machado is speaking with reporters during a Heritage Foundation event today.  💻 Watch Machado’s remarks

➤ QUICK HITS:

— Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin is seeking to disqualify the prosecutors in his case.

— The Department of Justice decided a roughly 100-year federal ban on mailing handguns through the U.S. Postal Service is unconstitutional.

— Republican Rep. Don Bacon (Neb.) said he would consider impeaching Trump if the U.S. decides to invade Greenland, an idea he called “utter buffoonery.”
