⚖️ The Supreme Court

It’s mid-June. You know what that means? Clear the docket before the summer break:

Greg Nash

The Supreme Court is nearing its summer break. But before the justices end their term, they must clear out their pending cases. They chipped away at the docket this morning — here are the newest rulings:

A Rastafarian who was forcibly shaven by prison guards can’t sue: The court decided that a Rastafarian, whose dreadlocks were shaved by prison guards, cannot sue the prison. The Washington Post pointed out that this is notable because the court has been expanding religious freedoms lately. Read more

Human rights abuse lawsuit: “The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 on Tuesday that practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual movement cannot sue tech giant Cisco over allegations of aiding the Chinese government’s surveillance and torture of the group.” Read more

🥊 On Capital Hill

This could be messy:

President Trump will meet with Senate Republicans face-to-face on Wednesday after building tensions between the two sides spilled into public view.

Some of their biggest disagreements:

  • Trump wants Republicans to nix the filibuster.

  • He also wants the nonpartisan Senate parliamentarian to be fired to help his voter ID bill pass.

  • Senate Republicans are deeply skeptical of the Trump administration’s memorandum of understanding with Iran.

Adding to the friction: “Yet, most Republicans are reluctant to challenge Trump to his face after watching him end the political careers of Sens. Bill Cassidy (La.) and John Cornyn (Texas) this spring by endorsing their political opponents in GOP primaries.”

Read Alexander Bolton’s reporting on how this meeting could go: ‘Senate GOP headed for showdown with Trump over SAVE America Act, Iran deal’

ALSO TOP OF MIND FOR THE MEETING:

“Sen. Rick Scott (Fla.), the chair of the Senate Republican Steering Committee, is circulating a plan among Senate Republicans to avoid another government shutdown later this year so that they can discuss it when President Trump meets with GOP senators Wednesday.” Read more

Any 85-5 vote is refreshing these days:

The Senate overwhelmingly passed a housing bill on Monday, aimed at lowering housing costs.

The bipartisan bill passed 85-5.

An example of what’s in it: There was a provision that would have effectively barred private equity from buying up single-family homes. It was hotly contested, so lawmakers landed on a compromise: Companies who already own 350 or more single-family homes cannot buy more. Read more on the bill

What happens now?: It heads to the House, where it’s expected to pass this week. President Trump is then expected to sign it.

🐘 Other news:

Two high-profile Republicans say they are done with the party:

Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson says he can no longer support the Republican Party. He questioned how any American “could support a political party that’s not loyal to the United States.”

More from Carlson: “It’s not possible to vote for people like that and I’m not going to,” he said. “I voted Republican my entire life, I worked at Fox News … I’ve been a consistent defender for 35 years of the Republican Party, but there’s no defending this because it’s immoral.”

Is he a Democrat now?: No, he said he doesn’t support the Democratic Party, either, so he doesn’t know what he will do now. But he is insistent that he won’t vote for Republicans in coming elections.

Then, MTG piled on: Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) chimed in to say she is also done supporting the Republican Party.

From Greene: “There is A LOT of us that are absolutely fed up and will not support a party that betrays its voters and country,” she continued. “That does not mean we are turning into Democrats either. But we are DONE with the America LAST Republican Party.”

TWO MORE ARRESTS IN THE UFC PLOT:

Two more people have been arrested in connection with an alleged planned attack on the White House’s “UFC Freedom 250” event. Neither has entered a plea. Federal authorities say they have identified at least six people who were allegedly involved.

TRUMP’S NAME HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE KENNEDY CENTER:

President Trump’s name has been officially removed from the Kennedy Center’s façade, according to new photos in The Washington Post.
